| The Over-celebrated Day |
Prices of roses are tripled, gift shops are stocked with sweet heart-shaped items, romantic and posh restaurants are fully booked, singles desperately looking for dates, girls on the street all holding a bouquet of flowers with the boys all dressed up, ready to impress their dates. Such are the typical characteristics that mark Valentine's Day.
One wonders how much sincerity and meaning is there to celebrate such a commercialised day. A quick check on the history of Valentine's Day online showed varied stories, but ultimately, it boils down to sharing and showing love, especially on this special occasion.
Still, I was honoured to have a date, to have my first boyfriend being my Valentine. Strange as it may seem but the date turned out to be one of the most unforgettable and romantic ones. The feeling is somewhat different now that we are older and not together, but the sense of surreal belongingness is definitely present. Not forgetting to show some love to the very-important ladies at my current home in SG, I bought my mom and aunt a soft and cuddly never-wilt flower each. Needless to say, they were surprised and elated and I guess that was the meaningful gift for this year's Vday.
Show love and be loved every day of your life. |
